Description
In July, the weather pattern in the Canadian Gulf Islands tends to include a several hour period of complete absence of wind that starts just before sunrise and extends to mid morning. If you happen to be a sea kayaker or photographer, this is a great time of day to be up paddling, taking pictures, or both. If you're on a sailboat waiting for wind, it's a good time to sleep in or have some coffee.
This photo was made from a beach campsite on just such a perfectly calm morning in July at Bedwell Harbor on South Pender Island, Canada. A group of geese happened to be out for their morning swim, adding a nice touch to this view to the southeast.
The schooner Zodiak is a regionally famous 127 foot wooden motorsailer built in 1924 in Maine. She was purchased by the San Francisco Bar Pilots Association in 1931, and served as a pilot vessel stationed approximately nine miles west of the Golden Gate. She retired from pilot service in 1972, and was purchased in 1973, reverting to the original name of Zodiak. She still sails (and attracts photographers) in the waters of the Canadian Gulf Islands and Washington State's San Juan Islands.
