Description
In mid winter, the short days give way to the long nights. December and January in the northern hemisphere find the moon with a high trajectory across the northern sky, visually opposed to the low sun to the south. This is sometimes called the "Long Night Moon."
This photograph was made in late afternoon on a January day in the Cascade Mountains of Washington State. The view is to the northeast from the west flank of Denny Mountain. Mt. Thomson is the nearly black tooth-shaped peak below and just to the right of the moon. Chikamin Peak is to the right, and if you look carefully, you can see ski tracks in the snow in the bottom right. A fine winter afternoon scene!
