This small waterfall is located just inside the east boundary of Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington State. More than a decade before this photograph was made, I was a member of a Search and Rescue team during a multi-day search for a missing solo hiker/photographer who had gone missing in this part of the Park. Tragically, we never found him. For years after that mission, I had a memory of the waterfalls I had seen during that search and always thought that I'd go back to photograph them.
In September of 2012, I retraced our search route from its exit onto Highway 123 just south of its junction with Highway 410. Within a mile of the road, I came upon this small waterfall on an overcast day with fog in the trees. I set up the tripod on a small bridge across the stream and made this time exposure between wind gusts that were slightly moving the tree branches.
Out of this tragedy has emerged an image of beauty and tranquility. I trust he is resting peaceful...
Light, Water,Air, and Time. These are the basic elements of life. Without all four, living things on this small and fragile planet would not exist. Our remote ancestors intuitively understood this. They revered these crucial elements in legends, drawings, and ceremony. I believe that we are innately attracted to imagery, poetry, songs, and words that contain these elements because a deep part of our collective soul knows that these things are the very pillars of our home, our origin.
